Late fees

Late fee removed: credit or refund?

What happens when your chapter removes a late fee, and why money you already paid may not go back to your card.

When your chapter removes a late fee, it reverses the fee: the fee comes off the charge it was added to. What that means for you depends on whether you had already paid the fee.

If you hadn't paid the late fee yet

The reversal lowers what you owe on that charge by the amount of the fee. Nothing else happens. You'll see a Late Fee Reversed line in your payment history.

If you had already paid the late fee

Reversing a late fee does not send money back to your card or bank account. The fee comes off the charge, but the money you paid stays with your chapter.

To get that money back, your treasurer has to do one of these:

  • Issue a refund on the payment that covered the fee. The money goes back to the card or bank account you paid with, and you get a refund email. Refunds typically arrive within 5-10 business days, depending on your bank.
  • Add account credit. The amount is added to your MyGreek account. You may see "You have $X in credit" on your balance. Credit is used automatically on your open charges and on new charges your chapter bills you.

How to tell which one you got

  • Refund: you get a refund email from MyGreek, and the refund shows on your card or bank statement.
  • Account credit: your balance shows "You have $X in credit", or your next charge is already partly paid.
  • Only a reversal: you see Late Fee Reversed in your payment history, but no refund email and no credit. If you had already paid the fee, ask your treasurer to refund it or add it as credit.

MyGreek doesn't email or text you when a late fee is reversed, so check your payment history.

Who to ask

Contact your chapter's treasurer. Only chapter admins can reverse a late fee, issue a refund or add credit. MyGreek can't move your chapter's money for you. If you aren't sure who your treasurer is, email support@mygreek.us.

Common questions

I was told my late fee would be refunded, but nothing is on my card. Why?

Most likely the fee was reversed, not refunded. A reversal takes the fee off your charge but doesn't send money back to your card. Ask your treasurer to issue a refund on the payment or add the amount as account credit.

The refund was issued. Why don't I see it yet?

Refunds typically arrive within 5-10 business days. Check your statement for a credit from the same merchant you paid.
