Open accounts and move money
Apply for Crowded chapter bank accounts, open more accounts, find account and routing numbers, and move money between accounts.
Chapter admins can apply for Crowded bank accounts, open extra accounts and move money between them on the Banking page, in the web app. For what Banking is and how it relates to payouts, see Banking with MyGreek.
Before you start
The officer who applies gives their own personal details for identity verification, so pick the officer who will be responsible for the account (usually the president or treasurer). They'll need:
- Their date of birth and Social Security Number (SSN), or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
- Their home address.
- The chapter's State of Incorporation and Year of Incorporation. The chapter's legal name and EIN come from your MyGreek chapter details. Your name, email, phone and date of birth are filled in from your MyGreek profile when it has them.
If your chapter already has a Crowded account, don't apply. On Banking, select the here link next to "Already bank with Crowded?" and select Send request. MyGreek support connects your existing account and follows up by email.
Apply for a Crowded account
- In the side menu, open Banking and select Get started with Banking.
- Personal Info: check your First Name, Last Name, Email and Phone. Optionally pick your Title (President, Treasurer, Secretary or Controller). Select Next.
- Identity Verification: enter your Date of Birth and Social Security Number (SSN). Select Next.
- Personal Address: enter your home address. Select Next.
- Chapter Details: enter the State of Incorporation and Year of Incorporation, and optionally the chapter's Website. Select Next.
- Review & Submit: check everything. Select Edit on any section to fix it.
- Tick the box to agree to Crowded's Consent to Electronic Disclosure, Deposit Terms & Conditions, Cardholder Terms & Conditions and Deposit Account Disclosures.
- Select Submit Application.
What happens after you apply
Banking shows Bank Application Status with an Under Review label and the date you submitted. Crowded reviews the application; the app says this "typically takes 1-2 business days."
- Approved: Banking opens to your chapter's accounts and the Banking totals.
- Denied: the page says "Your application was denied." and shows the reason if Crowded gave one. Fix what the reason points to, then select Apply Again to submit a new application.
If MyGreek sent you a bank application link
If your chapter isn't on MyGreek yet, the MyGreek team may send you a Chapter Bank Application link instead. You don't need to log in. It asks for the same personal details as above, plus the chapter's details that MyGreek would otherwise already have:
- Organization Legal Name: the chapter's legal entity name as registered.
- The chapter's street address, city, state, postal code and phone number.
- The chapter's Website (required here; a social media page works too).
For Street Address, enter a personal home address only. Campus apartment addresses, PO boxes, mail forwarding and registered agent addresses are not allowed. Complete the captcha and select Submit Application. The application goes to Crowded for review, and the MyGreek team follows up with next steps.
Open another account
Each extra account is its own account inside your chapter's Crowded banking, with its own balance and numbers.
- On Banking, next to Accounts, select New.
- Pick an icon by selecting the emoji, and enter a Nickname (for example "Formal Account").
- Select Create.
The new account shows in Accounts right away. Its balance and numbers fill in once Crowded finishes setting it up.
To rename an account, hover over it and select the pencil icon. To change its icon, select the emoji. Your main account's name and icon can't be changed.
Find your account and routing numbers
- On Banking, select the account under Accounts.
- Next to the last four digits of the account number, select Show.
- Account & Routing Numbers shows both numbers. Select the copy icon next to either one.
Use these numbers to receive ACH transfers into that account, for example from your old bank or from your national organization.
Move money between your accounts
You can move money from your main account into your other accounts.
- On Banking, next to Accounts, select Transfer. (It shows once you have more than one account.)
- Transfer Funds shows your main account's available balance. Enter an amount next to each account you want to fund. Leave the others blank.
- Check Total to move. It can't be more than the main account's available balance.
- Select Transfer.
If one transfer fails, the others still go through. The failed ones are listed with the reason, and their amounts stay filled in so you can try again.
Moving money back into the main account, or out to a bank outside Crowded, isn't available in MyGreek. To put money on an officer's card, see Issue and manage officer debit cards.
View an account's transactions
Select an account under Accounts to open its page. It shows the account's Balance, its status (Open, Frozen or Closed), and Transactions for that account only. Each transaction shows the date, amount, description, card and type:
| Type | What it is |
|---|---|
| Purchase / Card | A debit card purchase. |
| Reversal | A card purchase that was reversed. |
| ATM | An ATM withdrawal. |
| Transfer | Money moved between your chapter's accounts or cards. |
| ACH Payment | Money that came in by ACH (bank transfer), such as a payout. |
| ACH Transfer | Money sent out by ACH. |
| ACH Return | An incoming ACH payment that was sent back. |
| Fee | A fee, such as the physical card fee. |
The Banking page shows the same list for all accounts together, with an Account column.
Common questions
How long does Crowded take to review our application?
The app says it "typically takes 1-2 business days." Banking shows Under Review until then.
It says "This EIN is already registered with Crowded." What now?
Your chapter's EIN already has a Crowded account, often one a past officer opened. MyGreek support is notified automatically and will help connect it. You don't need to apply again.
Do we also need to connect our Crowded account with Plaid?
No. Crowded accounts already show in MyGreek. Connect an outside bank account is for accounts at other banks.
Can other officers see Banking?
Only chapter admins can open Banking. See Add or remove an admin.
