A payment plan payment failed

What happens after a failed plan payment, why your plan may have been canceled, and how to fix it.

When a scheduled plan payment doesn't go through, the person paying gets an email with the subject Payment Failed - Payment Plan. The email says why it failed and either the date we'll try again or that the plan was canceled. In the plan, the payment shows Retrying with the next try date, or Failed.

How retries work

  1. The first try fails: we try again 1 day later.
  2. The second try fails: we try again 3 days after that.
  3. The third try fails: the payment is marked Failed and the plan is canceled.

Each retry charges the payment method that is on the plan at that time.

Why this happens

The card was declined, and we'll retry

Common reasons are not enough money in the account or the bank declining the charge. The plan is still active.

Fix: before the retry date in the email, do one of these:

  • Make sure the money is there and the card will work.
  • Switch to another card or bank account. See Change the card on a payment plan.
  • Pay that amount yourself now. A manual payment counts toward the failed plan payment first, so there's nothing left to retry. See Pay your dues.

The card can't be used again, so the plan was canceled right away

Some failures won't fix themselves, so we don't retry. The plan is canceled on the first failure. These include an expired, closed, lost or blocked card, a closed or frozen bank account, wrong card or account details, or a failed address or security-code (CVC) check.

Fix: set up a new plan with a working payment method, or pay the balance. See Set up a payment plan.

All three tries failed, so the plan was canceled

Fix: the same. Pay the remaining balance or set up a new plan with a working payment method. You also get a "Payment Plan Canceled" email.

I never got an email that it failed

  • The emails go to the email address we have for the person paying the plan. If a parent pays the plan and we don't have an email address for them, only the member is emailed.
  • We don't send texts about failed plan payments.
  • Check your spam or junk folder for the "Payment Failed - Payment Plan" email.

You can always check the plan in the app or at pay.mygreek.us. A failed payment shows Retrying or Failed.

Now there's a late fee on my balance

If your chapter skips late fees only for charges on an approved payment plan, that protection ends when the plan is canceled. A late fee can then be added on your chapter's normal schedule.

Fix: pay the balance or set up a new plan to stop more fees. Only your treasurer can remove a late fee. If they remove one you already paid, it's usually given back as a credit on your balance, not a refund to your card. See Late fee removed: credit or refund?.

Still stuck?

Contact your chapter treasurer about your balance or late fees. For problems with the app, email support@mygreek.us or use the chat in the MyGreek app.
