File your chapter's IRS 990

See which Form 990 your chapter owes, file it or have MyGreek file it, record an extension, and mark a year as filed.

Most tax-exempt chapters must file a Form 990 return with the IRS every year. The Taxes page, titled 501c7 IRS Compliance, shows your chapter's filing status for the last five tax years. From there you can file, ask MyGreek for help, or record what you've already done. Anyone with View Compliance & Taxes can see the page. Only admins can file, record an extension or mark a year as filed.

What the Taxes page shows

The top of the page shows four details:

  • EIN
  • Tax-Exempt Status: Exempt, Not Exempt or Unknown. Not Exempt means the IRS doesn't list your chapter as tax-exempt. To become exempt, the chapter needs to file Form 1024 with Schedule D.
  • Fiscal Year Ends
  • Legal Name

Under Compliance History, each row is one tax year, with its Fiscal Year, Status and Due date. A tax year is the fiscal year that starts in that calendar year. The main statuses are:

StatusWhat it means
In ProgressThe fiscal year hasn't ended yet. Nothing is due.
Needs FilingThe year has ended and the IRS has no return on record yet.
OverdueThe due date has passed and there's no return on record.
FiledThe IRS has your return on record.
Pending FilingYou asked MyGreek to file your 990-N.
Manually FiledAn admin marked the year as filed and uploaded proof.

If you asked MyGreek to prepare a return for a year, that row shows Filing requested and the date you asked.

When the return is due

A Form 990 is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends. For a fiscal year ending June 30, that's November 15. If that day is a weekend, it moves to the next Monday. An extension makes it due six months later (see Record an extension).

Which form your chapter files

When you select File Now, MyGreek shows the three forms. It marks one Recommended based on the payments and credits your chapter recorded in MyGreek that fiscal year.

  • Form 990-N: gross receipts normally $50,000 or less.
  • Form 990-EZ: gross receipts under $200,000 and assets under $500,000.
  • Form 990: everyone else.

The recommendation only counts money that went through MyGreek. It doesn't know about money your chapter collected elsewhere or about your assets. If either applies, choose the form that fits your chapter's full finances.

File a Form 990-N in MyGreek

MyGreek can file the 990-N (the e-Postcard) for you for tax year 2025. For any other year, file it free on IRS.gov, then use Mark as Filed.

  1. In Taxes, find the year and select File Now.
  2. Select Form 990-N.
  3. Check the Chapter Address, then select Next.
  4. Enter the Principal Officer's name and address. It starts filled in with your primary admin.
  5. Select Submit.

The year changes to Pending Filing. This sends your details to MyGreek's team, and they file the e-Postcard for you.

Have MyGreek prepare your 990-EZ or 990

MyGreek's in-house tax team can prepare and file a 990-EZ or a full 990 with you, for any year. You send the request on the web.

  1. In Taxes, find the year and select File Now.
  2. Select Form 990-EZ or Form 990.
  3. Check Your name, Email and Phone. You need an email or a phone number.
  4. Add anything we should know (optional).
  5. Select Send request.

Our tax team will reach out to walk you through your chapter's finances and next steps. The year shows Filing requested, but its status doesn't change, so you keep getting reminders until the return is filed. If you send the request again, we know you're still waiting, and it also updates your contact details.

The Plus plan includes free Form 990-EZ filing and discounted full Form 990 filing. To see your chapter's plan, open My Chapter → Plan.

Record an extension (Form 8868)

If your chapter filed Form 8868 with the IRS, record it here so your due date and reminders move.

  1. In Taxes, find the year and select Record Extension.
  2. Confirm in Record Filing Extension.

The due date moves six months later and shows Extended (Form 8868).

Form 8868 must be filed with the IRS by the original due date, and you can only record it here until that date. The 990-N can't be extended. To undo, select Remove Extension.

Mark a year as filed

If you filed outside MyGreek, mark the year as filed so the reminders stop.

  1. In Taxes, find the year and select Mark as Filed.
  2. Under Upload proof of filing (Required), add a PDF, PNG or JPG, such as the IRS acceptance.
  3. Add a note if you like, then select Mark as Filed.

The year shows Manually Filed, and View Filing opens your proof. Undo removes what you entered. After that, the next IRS check sets the status from IRS records.

How MyGreek checks the IRS

Once a day, MyGreek checks IRS records for your chapter's EIN. It looks for filed returns and e-Postcards and checks your tax-exempt status. When the IRS posts your return, the status updates on its own. The IRS can take a while to post a return after you file it. The daily check doesn't change years you marked as filed yourself.

Filing reminders

If a return hasn't been filed, chapter admins get reminders:

  • the day after your fiscal year ends
  • 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before the due date, and on the due date
  • 1, 7, 14, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after the due date

Every reminder is an email. Until 7 days after the due date, reminders also come by text and app notification. They go out during the day in your chapter's time zone. Only chapters listed as Exempt with a fiscal year on file get them.

Reminders stop once the year is filed or marked as filed. If you record an extension, they move to the new due date.

To turn them off for yourself, go to Settings → Admin Notifications and turn off Tax Filing Reminders.

Taxes on the mobile app

In the app's Admin tab, Taxes lists your chapter's years. Admins can use File Now for a 2025 990-N and can mark a year as filed. Requests to prepare a 990-EZ or 990, and extensions, are on the web only.

Common questions

We submitted our 990-N but it still says Pending Filing.

The daily IRS check doesn't update years in Pending Filing, so the row can keep saying that after the IRS accepts the e-Postcard. Email support@mygreek.us to confirm it was filed.

Our status says Not Exempt or Unknown. What do we do?

The IRS doesn't list your chapter as tax-exempt under your EIN. Email support@mygreek.us and we'll help you work out what happened and what to file.

We filed weeks ago but it still says Needs Filing.

The IRS can take time to post returns. Use Mark as Filed with your proof of filing to stop the reminders now.
